Roller Derby – Tutorials

Roller derby is an action-packed full-contact sport on roller skates. It combines both slow and high speeds with tactical skill, teamwork, and a healthy dose of determination. From the outside, a derby game often looks chaotic, but in fact, it follows a clearly structured set of rules.

If you want to learn more about roller derby and learn the sport yourself, you will find numerous posts, photos, and videos further down in our blog. In them, we not only explain the rules as well as individual techniques and tricks, but also provide you with solid background knowledge.

In addition, you will find out everything you need to know to start the sport yourself – including the selection of your own roller derby equipment

Daniel – visiting the Rhine Rebels in Basel

It’s going to be exciting! We at SkaMiDan checked out the “Rhine Rebels Basel” and got a closer look at “Roller Derby.”

I (Daniel), among other things, took quite a few hits, got to face my first tripod, try out the apex jump, and learn the rules.

You can see all that and much more in the following video!

Below you will find all our blog posts about roller derby. Our first post covers the rules and the most common and important roller derby terms. This post will give you a comprehensive understanding of how the game works.

Roller Derby Roller Skates

Roller skates for roller derby

Roller Derby skates, also known as quad skates, are specially designed for speed, agility, and hard-hitting contact. Compared to recreational, lifestyle, or dance skates, they are more robust, offer direct power transfer thanks to their harder boots, and are therefore much more responsive.

If you are just getting into roller derby, you can opt for an affordable roller derby skate, which you will probably even feel more comfortable in than a professional model. When you realize that you are completely hooked on the sport of derby and are only slowly making progress, then it is time to upgrade to better skates.

Either way, you will find the right derby roller skate for every level in our range.

Protectors

Protective gear for roller derby

Roller derby is a full-contact sport where you can collide with each other at high speeds or take nasty falls. Not only is this why we recommend very good protective gear for roller derby, and especially pads with a hard plastic shell, but also because you’ll feel more confident when you’re well protected and can take game-changing risks.

For roller derby, we recommend the following pads, especially those from the brands Ennui, 187 Killer Pads, TSG, or Triple Eight:

  • Helmet
  • Wrist guards
  • Elbow pads
  • Knee pads
  • Padded pants
  • Torso protection
  • Mouthguard/gum shield
  • Shin guards (can be useful, but are not strictly necessary)

With the right protective gear, you’ll be perfectly prepared—no matter what position you play on the track.

Roller Derby Accessories

Toe guards, welding cloths, carrying aids and more

With the right accessories, such as toe guards (Toe Protector/Toe Guards), you protect your Derby shoes from wear and tear and can enjoy your skates for a long time.

Sweatbands and other accessories make your Derby more pleasant and comfortable, allowing you to concentrate better on the track.

Brakes & Toe Stops

Brakes & Toe Stops for Roller Derby Skates

Especially in roller derby, intact toe stops are essential and can make the difference between victory and defeat. Unfortunately, they are also the most worn-out parts in derby.

However, we always have new and suitable stops for the rink. We carry stops in many different colors, thread lengths, and sizes, so there is the right one for every position or playing style.

Large stops allow you as a blocker to stand more securely or to stop safely after a quick overtaking maneuver.

Off the track, e.g. for roller disco, you can also install the right jam plugs and let loose.
