Lips, Stalls & Plants – Trick List for Aggressive Inline Skating

In aggressive inline skating, the "lip" refers to the top edge of an obstacle, typically a quarterpipe, mini-ramp, or bowl. So the lip is the edge or coping that forms the transition between the ramp and the platform. Tricks on the "lip" are therefore called lip tricks.

Lip Tricks vs. Grinds – What's the Difference?

Even though many grinds are performed on the lip, technically speaking, they are not considered classic lip tricks. Lip tricks are characterized by the fact that you do not slide or grind over the coping, but instead hold a stable position on the edge. It's all about balance, style, and body control – not speed or sliding.

Typical grinds such as the soul, royale, or topside therefore do not belong in this category. Instead, the focus is on stalls, handplants, and creative combinations.

Lip tricks such as "stalls" are, however, excellent for practicing the posture and position for later grinds, or simply for adding more style to lips that are too short to grind.

Whether you are just starting out with stalls or are already working on invert combos – lip tricks bring variety, technique, and personality to your run. They make every session more creative and show off your sense of rhythm and control.

Handplants & Co. – Style & Control on Your Hands

A handplant is a trick in which you support yourself on the lip with one or both hands while your legs are in the air or assume a trick position.

Popular variations:

  • Invert – Classic one-handed handstand with legs extended.
  • Fastplant – Short hand support combined with a foot kick.
  • Palm Flip – Pushing off the lip with one hand, combined with a flip.

Handplants require courage, body tension, and control – and always draw attention at the spot.

A rather less common lip trick is, for example, the "breakdance," which you can also find in our trick list.

Switch-Ups & Lip Dancers – Creative Combinations

The real experts and creative minds among us combine a wide variety of lip tricks and transition from one trick to the next on the lip, known as switch-ups.
